So, it used to be that we hadn’t upgraded to Windows 10 because our IT department hadn’t cleared it as “secure” enough (it’s not that it wasn’t secure, it just hadn’t gone through the security affirmation process). Now apparently it is, since they upgraded me to 10. I’ve never really had 10; I decided not to upgrade my personal laptop, though for a while the laptop I used for travel had it.

I know this is just me getting older, but I am weirdly suspicious not of Windows 10 as a system but of the Windows 10 aesthetic. Everything is too smooth and square. Things that should be rounded are pointy and things that should be pointy are rounded. Everything is well-animated and in soothing pastel greys.

I come from an era where computers weren’t even MEANT to be soothing, where it was just accepted that they would challenge you visually as well as implicitly. And I’m not saying we should go back to a Windows 3.0 aesthetic or anything, I don’t want computers to be difficult, I’m just saying. It’s…

It’s quiet. Too quiet.

So, I think someone high up in management at my institution got hacked last year or something, since in the past year we have developed some serious paranoia regarding data security. Not to say that data security isn’t important or that I dislike the changes, I think they are for the most part sensible, but we went from like, zero to Steranko-System-in-Leverage in the course of a month or two.

The latest development is a mysterious edict that we all have to leave our computers at work but logged out tonight so that they can “encrypt” our computers somehow – I assume it’s some kind of software they’re going to install, but there’s been a dearth of information over what exactly this Encryption Of Computers entails. Furthermore, I was told that my computer is incompatible with encryption (loose lips sink ships, laptop!) so it will have to be wiped completely and upgraded. Which I’m fine with, all my work is on a network drive anyway and I just had to remember to move a few files.

But my laptop apparently heard them and knows it’s being wiped. Yesterday the flash stopped working and today my Outlook has decided to neither send nor receive any email. Additionally, a retail clothing website just broke Firefox so hard it no longer allows me to log into anything.

What I’m saying is that this laptop is going down swinging, and I kind of admire its fighting spirit, but goddamn, could it not have waited until the end of the workday so I wouldn’t have to use Microsoft Webmail to do the last two hours of business today.

I don't know yet whether my laptop is dead or only mostly dead and my local library only gives me an hour a day on its computers, so I don't think I'll be getting much written or done in the near future. (Pecking at the tiny touchscreen of my iPhone 5S to write fic isn't happening.) The shop guy says that if there's damage to my Windows OS since it's Windows XP and thus long discontinued and unsupported I might have to give my laptop up as dead. I'm hoping that at the very least he can save my files, since I don't have everything on my zip drives. My iTunes MP3 library alone, never mind ten years of photo files, never mind my nearly 20 years of fic....

I managed to post some things to [community profile] weissvsaiyuki and now today to AO3 but don't have the ability to post HTML files to my personal website in my current circumstances. You can see those fics on the DW community above or at AO3 as

Farce,” a post-canon, PG-13, Weiß Kreuz Crawford and Schuldig fic

and

Off the Chain,” a PG-13, gen, Saiyuki fic mostly featuring Gojyo and Sanzo

I got my MRI and MRA tests results back and, as usual, they say I'm no more messed up than the last time I did them, which means my neurologist has no idea why my pain, odd sensations, and feelings of weakness have been worse in the last few weeks so he doesn't know how to treat them. Next verse, just like the first.

I went on a veritable archiving frenzy over the weekend.

Duty and Bloodshed (One Piece, CP9)
Collected stories of CP9, loosely interconnected.

Includes the 'Yalta-verse' stories.

So far there's Dedication, Belling the Cat (aka, Lucci gets p0wned), and Hot Seat. There will be Cordially Invited, Yalta and Homework up by the end of the week too.

Break in the Routine (Naruto, KakaGai)
Kakashi had heard people complain about 'routine', calling it humdrum and boring. For Kakashi, routine meant that nobody was actively trying to kill him and there were no missions that day. Routine was good.

An implausible green and orange streak vaulted over the iron fence and darted off a cherry tree, causing a dramatic shower of petals around him as he hit the ground. Gai, showing up for his regular challenge. Yup, still routine...Until Gai told him what he was challenging Kakashi at this time.

Beautiful Symmetries (Gundam Wing, 1x2x5)
Neither the war nor Treize had had the decency to finish me off. Adrift without a battle or an enemy to fight, I may have made some, shall we say, ill-considered decisions. Fortunately I survived the Peace in much the same way I had survived the War. As a Preventer, I could still be useful, I could still fight for a good cause and justify my survival. Best of all, I could do so as a solo operative, an independence that suited my solitary nature down to the ground.

And then those two showed up in my life again, needing a partner.

It'd been a few months since my life had last gone to hell in a hand-basket. I guess I was past due.

---

And of course The Arrangement and Source of All Things are also still getting updated on a daily or weekly basis, respectively.
