I love Wikipedia. Sometimes I get lost in it for hours. Today I stumbled from articles about hereditary diseases to childhood psychiatric disorders to demonic possession to alien abductions. How did I manage this? Just by following (not particularly central) links in the articles. I click on what sparks my interest. What does that selection say about me, I wonder. Anyway the last article, the one about alien abductions, linked to this site: Alien Survival Guide

This is a really cool site, really educational (in a way) and definitely entertaining. It's entertaining if you don't believe in alien abductions which I don't. (I hope I'm not offending anyone) In my experience the world is orderly, mundane, in a way not very exciting. Things out of the ordinary, supernatural, mystic / religious (sorry) are some kind of fiction. So I think the phenomenon is interesting, but I don't take it serious. This site didn't change that, quite on the contrary. I'm not sure if it's serious or some kind of parody. If it's serious, it's actually quite scary. The way they talk about being constantly in danger of being abducted and the way the refer to the aliens ("extraterrestrial scourge", "insidious", "gangly fingers", "intergalactic adversaries", that's only from the introduction), it's completely sensational and populist. They constantly mention research and studies, but you don't find any acutal citations. There's no real information about the owner of the site, but they do ask you to make donations. Very dubious. So I took everything with a grain of salt. The list of songs that supposedly can deflect alien mind control had me laughing out loud. The advise of shooting the aliens' heads off before they can paralyse you shocked me. First they tell you to be constantly paranoid and on edge and then they advise you to have fire arms at hand and to shoot when you feel threatened, just great. The scariest thing is there are probably people out there who feel and act exactly that way. Still, all things considered it was very amusing.

Very entertaining site, thanks for linking to it. I for one am pretty certain that it's a parody (though I have come across genuine sites that are almost as ludicrous - if I still had the computer on which I'd bookmarked them I'd link to them, they were hysterical in a really disturbing sort of way). Would have thought that one of the anti-mind control tracks would have been Black Sabbath's Paranoid though.

So I think the phenomenon is interesting, but I don't take it serious.

I've read some really fascinating articles on Sleep Paralysis, which is the neurological condition believed to induce the majority of 'abduction experiences', people who suffer from episodes can report remarkably consistent experiences (i.e. paralysis, feeling of terror, pressure on chest, seeing presence taking form of grey creature...etc.)
