the big surprise
Sep. 20th, 2006 02:04 pmI turned 30 this Saturday. I still don't feel like 30. So I guess that's okay.
I still can't believe what my family did, though. I knew they had planned something big. I suspected they had planned a trip for me because my mom insisted that I take my vacation after my b-day. I was even a bit a miffed at the thought of them arranging a trip for me without consulting me. What if I had other plans?!
I didn't get a trip. I got something so much better! I got .... a friend! I did my MA in London and lived in a flat with some other girls. I was close friends with one of them especially and we're still keeping in contact. She's from Singapore and now working in Kabul, Afghanistan. And my family, ie my sister, invited her here for my birthday!!!! Can you believe that??? I was literally speechless when I saw her. I think I was in shock. I hadn't seen her for more than a year. It was so wonderful!
My b-day was just perfect. The best ever. Everything fit. My friend from Singapore was there and my friends and family. The weather was great. We had a garden party. They played my music. We had so much fun. I just kept beaming the whole day.
On Sunday my friend and I went back to my place in Düsseldorf. We had dinner in a Japanese restaurant, went on a shopping spree on Mondy and luxuriated in a spa yesterday. It was soooo good!
Today she had to leave for Kabul again. I hope she'll be safe. And now I have to start saving because next year I'm planning on visiting her in Singapore.
This was the best gift ever. I'm so grateful to my parents and sister. It's like my little sister said. She wanted to do something special for this occasion. So she thought of something better than material things. She gave me memories.
